During the freestyle stroke cycle, the arms are moving continuously. Therefore, it is necessary to master multiple arm positions. To simplify the learning process, we can break the cycle down into five distinct positions - the Entry, Catch, Pull, Finish and Recovery. These key positions are not very far apart in time or distance. So a swimmer in compliance with these five positions cannot get too far off track in between. Consequently, mastery of these arm positions will ensure that a swimmer has at least a fairly effective technique.
